The section is studied in detail in order to determine the succession of faciès in each bed and the environmental conditions under which they were formed. Palaeontological and sedimentological data were collected both in the field and the laboratory (thin sections). Special attention was given to the species distribution and mor-phology of the stromatoporoids which are the most abundant fossils at this level. The results show that the succession is rhythmic. Eight "facies-sequences", corresponding to basin-wide varia-tions, have been recognised. They lead to the conclusion that the environment of deposition was close to the reef-fringed edge (proximal back-reef) of a very shallow-water platform
